Bowl Predictions 11/26

These may be the most irrelevant rankings of the entire season because everything will change next week after Championship Saturday. But they’re not so irrelevant as I think they set the table for what’s to come. So here you go after a Rivalry Saturday here’s where I have them today plus conference championship predictions which lead into my bowl predictions based on those results that I think will happen next week:

The inference would be that in the final analysis that Clemson would be my number 1 team. This week though I don’t have them number 1 as you see. I couldn’t determine whether it be Clemson or Oklahoma so I just went with the undefeated Wisconsin to take the top spot. But I’ve said all along for Wisconsin to get in, they’re going to have to run the table. And I don’t see them doing that, I have them falling to Ohio State next week. If they win though….they are a deserving number 1 in the final analysis. It’s a boom or bust though, a lot riding on that B1G title game. Back to Clemson, I thought they had the best win of the top 3 teams, beating ranked South Carolina on the road. This will come in handy next week when they take care of Miami in the ACC Championship. Terrible loss for Miami. I know its cold for them on the road but its Pittsburgh. If they’re a top team you just have to win those games. Its their only loss of the season but what a terrible time to have this. Now….if Miami wins…..could they sneak into the top 4? I think so. It would be as a 4 I think. Consider if Auburn wins the SEC, Miami wins the ACC they jump the 2 loss Georgia if they loss and I think jump in with a 2 loss Auburn if they win the SEC and would have a quality win that Alabama doesn’t have so they’d jump Alabama that doesn’t play. So its not over yet for Miami who takes the biggest fall, they just need to win obviously and I think they get in the top 4. I don’t have that scenario though. Auburn just beats the good teams, they’re just being Auburn at this point of the season. They seem to have a knack of doing this, backdooring their way in, hell they could backdoor their way to a championship if they win the SEC. That’s the only way, they win they’re in the 4. No room for error with those 2 losses. A loss would plummet them but I think still they’re in a committee bowl game no matter what considering their victories. Alabama, tough L…..tough tough L. Their resume is thin. That’s the problem. That FSU win early on doesn’t look good at all now. That Mississippi State win doesn’t look that great. So how could they break into the top 4 without anymore games? Oklahoma is going to have to lose in the Big 12 title game, that’s a given. That may be it. I mean ok say Wisconsin loses, that could help but Ohio State I think has a better resume and would jump them. I guess it depends on how that game goes but I have the Buckeyes winning close and still jumping them on the strength of their schedule and of course rating Wisconsin as the number 1 team. That’s when these rankings aren’t so irrelevant. So to me its all about Oklahoma losing. Which could happen but I don’t think will. That’s the only way in my scenario where Alabama gets into the playoff. Speaking of Oklahoma, yeah they just gotta win. I feel like they’re tight roping this any maybe I’m underselling them. I don’t have the highest opinion of the Big 12 overall. I figure its going to be a shootout against TCU. But the Sooners should win and be number 2 and stay in the top 4. Can they lose and still make it in? Well if they lose Alabama takes their spot automatically so the margin for error is razor thin. Georgia has to take care of business and win the SEC otherwise its not making it into the playoff. A win and the sugar falls from the sky as is often said. Ohio State loses its over…. so they have to win. I think they will. It’s their time to back in too and I would take a 2 loss team that would beat undefeated Wisconsin to go into the playoff as they are finishing strong. That Penn State win was huge, crucial. Yeah they lost to Iowa and earlier in the season they lost to Oklahoma but that strength of schedule I like over others, strength of conference too factors in for me. Plus I put stock in playing in your conference title game something Alabama couldn’t do. UCF in a big one in their conference title game. Insert Memphis in this spot if they win. Should be a good game. Penn State just hanging out there I mean they don’t have to do anything and they’re in a committee game haha. It’s like their crowd surfing at this point. Just riding the wave. They rise no matter what right? Not that it means a damn thing though. Great blowout for Washington yesterday. Welcome in the rankings. Committee bowl game awaits and that’s it there’s no title. TCU is back in it. Pssh. Nice win but it doesn’t mean anything unless they beat Oklahoma. And really, they won’t go in the top 4 even with a win. But a Cotton Bowl appearance perhaps? Stanford knocked Notre Dame out of everything and I think very well jumps into all this top 12-ness with a win against USC which got jumped out because they didn’t play and didn’t have an impressive win to me last week compared to what Washington did. It’s in front of Stanford though to get into a committee game. If USC wins then they’re in this spot.

My favorite Saturday of the year upcoming. Even my final rankings and predictions are sure to change but we shall see!

Bowl Predictions 11/19

A blah week, no big games and not much movement at all on my rankings this week. Everyone that played won…except Oklahoma State which has dropped out of the rankings. It’ll be fun next week when I do the conference championship picks but this coming week is also fun with rivalry Saturday upcoming and I’d assume more separation. Here you go:

1. Alabama
2. Miami
3. Wisconsin
4. Clemson
5. Oklahoma
6. Georgia
7. Ohio State
8. Auburn
9. Notre Dame

So let’s talk about what’s to come on Saturday…game of the week is Alabama and Auburn in the Iron Bowl. I have to think that ‘Bama will win this. They have been a little shaky at times this season. It’s down on the flats. Auburn has really come on as the season’s been going on and I can see them….I feel like I can see them win fluky. I think when it comes down to it I don’t see them dominating Alabama like they did Georgia. But I gotta go with the more consistent winner. An Alabama loss and Auburn is in the driver’s seat perhaps in another week especially if they win the SEC. I think if they can win the SEC they’re in the playoff. Auburn can’t lose again. Alabama though if they lose on Saturday and if Georgia wins the SEC I think there is a shot Alabama backs in. Think that too if they lose in the SEC Championship too but can’t lose both games and get in. Miami has an easy one at Pittsburgh but surely a cold game awaits and they have issues. May be trickier than you’d think. Then its them and Clemson…phew, hold on for that. Wisconsin has Minnesota on the road and should destroy them. Then they await Ohio State. Oklahoma should beat West Virginia at home. It’ll be tough I think, at least for half the game. Then the Big 12 championship which will be another tough one against TCU I presume. That could be whew. No margin for error for Oklahoma. If they win it the next 2 weeks they’re in the playoff. Georgia, its going to be a tough one at Georgia Tech playing the high school, triple option offense. I can see them having problems, big problems with them. If there’s any team that could be upset in these rankings, I think it could be Georgia. Mission is clear for them, keep winning and they’re in the playoff. Any loss between now through the SEC Championship and its over.  Ohio State goes to the Big House against Michigan on Saturday which I’d say is the 2nd biggest game of the weekend. I don’t really know what to make of this game. I think the Buckeyes win but I can certainly see them f’n it up and if so there goes their playoff chances. But for them to get in they’re going to have to win Saturday and beat an undefeated Wisconsin team which on paper to me they should. It’s all out in front but its tough. A lot of these teams have tough roads to the playoff. Talked about Auburn…then there’s Notre Dame which is just there. I mean there’s no path to me to the playoff. I guess if Alabama, Georgia, Auburn all lose once, Miami and Clemson lose, Oklahoma loses out then from the wreckage there’s Notre Dame. I guess. They will have their hands full on the road against a tough Stanford team which still has a shot to play for the Pac 12. But hey they win they get a nice committee bowl. UCF has to keep winning with a lot on the line in a huge one in the American Athletic against South Florida on Saturday. Penn State won, that’s nice and they go to Maryland and should win. Ok. Ummm what could improve their situation? Say Ohio State loses this Saturday and next Saturday, they’d have 4 loses and say Wisconsin loses….ok nevermind. There’s no way they’re going to really improve their bowl status haha. But hey they may have the easiest path to a selection committee bowl. They just have to take care of business in College Park. USC makes it in. Eh. They win the Pac 12 in a couple of weeks and they’re in one of these coveted bowls. But anything more? I mean probably not. If all other teams imploded I guess. Which I mean you go back to that crazy scenario with Notre Dame if that worked out maybe they sneak into the top 4? Likely not a chance. I love rivalry Saturday! No assumptions can be made, they are rivals anything can happen so this should make for a topsy turvy rankings next week!

Bowl Predictions 11/12

Kind of a separation Saturday feel yesterday. A lot of huge games and there’s been shakeups in the rankings. It was also….maybe more so…a show me Saturday because of these big games. Which teams were really worthy, which were overvalued, which ones showed you something when they needed to? I love those kinds of Saturdays so here’s my new rankings…

1. Alabama
2. Miami (biggest jumper)
3. Wisconsin
4. Clemson
5. Oklahoma
6. Georgia
7. Ohio State
8. Auburn (new)
9. Notre Dame (biggest fall)

That was a tricky game for Alabama. On the road in cowbell country and it was their second real test of the season in back to back games. Mississippi State took them to the brink but the Tide rolled in the end and I see no reason why they should lose their top ranking. It’s not like the Bulldogs are any slouches and it was away and you know they know how to win. They know how to gut it out. So they showed me why once again they remain the number 1 team in the country. Cupcake this week then its the Iron Bowl which will be extremely tough! That game is in…..gotta check here, don’t you like that I write how I talk? And how I behave! Authentic, I try to be authentic here with you. So that game is in the flats. Yikes! Miami…whew, it was all the way live there last night! Flying all around, they were jacked the entire game! Statement win for the program. Hurricanes appear back and they remain undefeated! They’re rising with a bullet, highest jumper of the week for the second straight week. Can’t have any letups though through the ACC Title Game and Clemson. They’ve got Virginia at home, could be a trap then at Pittsburgh. Should continue taking care of business. How about this the 3 unbeatens are 1,2, 3. Way it should be right? Good win for Wisconsin against a tough Iowa team. Problem for the Badgers and this is why they got leapfrogged despite winning…their schedule is paper thin. Michigan coming up is another tough one for them. It’s at Camp Randall though. Then Minnesota…psssh….look we’re not going to really know till the Big 10 championship and they win that then obviously they’re in the playoff. A loss at this point could be catastrophic to their playoff prospects. Now the one loss teams and Clemson, well they won. *Yawn* Look wake me up in two weeks against Carolina and then the ACC Championship. I will say though that could we be in a situation where the loser of the ACC still gets in the top 4? Seems a big stretch…but….hey its not like the other teams are great and blowing people away. Something to keep deep in the back of your mind. Oklahoma had a fine win, they got it done very nicely against TCU to get into the top 5. Mayfield did his thing, is he the best college player now, maybe. Gotta watch for West Virginia in 2 weeks but its at home. Bad loss for Georgia at Auburn in a rivalry game. Maybe they should be lower on the rankings but they’re cushioned a bit by lower teams to fall too far from number 2. They didn’t come to play yesterday. Those Auburn/Georgia games are so weird. I mentioned Alabama knows how to win but Georgia really doesn’t. One’s still on top one is outside the top 10 and will fall further with any hiccups. That Georgia Tech game is no gimmie by any means. For them though I think if they continue winning and they beat Alabama (or Auburn) and they’re right back in the top 4. Why’d Ohio State have to lose last week?!?! Oh my goodness gracious! Nice bump up in my rankings. Michigan’s the big one in two weeks on the road. Hey if they win out they’ll make their case for being in the top 4 too. That Iowa game though…phew, that’s not a good look and I think that may be killer for them in what keeps them out of this top 4 thing. Disappointing really. Big win though against a very tough Michigan State team coming in. Look at you Auburn! You came to play against the Dawgs! Rightly deserving of getting into the rankings. And its all out in front of them. They had close losses on the road against Clemson and LSU. Could make an argument that they’re ahead of Ohio State. I’m not so sure about that but 2 weeks we’ll know for sure. Keep winning out and they are in the top 4. The Irish got slaughtered! Wasn’t even as close as the 41-8 score. They didn’t have a shot from the jump. They have Navy and Stanford remaining and I think they’ll be alright and get into a committee game. Anything more, nope. I don’t see them getting into the top 4 without complete and utter chaos. But they’ll get a great committee bowl with their name and record. They’re just not an elite team. UCF keeps winning. Big test in 2 weeks. But they’re the non-power best team as an undefeated and as long as they win they’ll get into a committee bowl. The Cowboys are back. Oklahoma State wins a shootout on the road and are back in the mix. Trouble for them is that they play the Kansas teams and that’s it. So….yeah, the ceiling is low for them without cataclysm above. Oh look Penn State won yesterday. Alright you’ll notice the committee bowl rankings. Threw the Pac 12 a bone with USC. I think they’ll win the conference. They have a tough game in the battle of LA this weekend against UCLA. I think Washington which had a bad loss probably beats Washington State which was on the cusp of getting into my rankings. So that knocks Penn State to a lower bowl. Let me say these conferences are top heavy. Lower teams stink I think. Which means a lot of parity, a lot of I don’t know, you tell me’s about who is going where, who beats who. It’s not a great year of college football at large but the good teams are making it good in that respect. This week’s schedule is kind of blah. Not nearly as exciting or revealing as the matchups yesterday. But you know, major movement can happen in those blah weeks. You just never know!

Bowl Predictions 11/5

The top teams held serve yesterday but losses by a few of the others shook things up only a little bit. With the losses towards the bottom and the lack of breakthrough teams winning, there weren’t big changes to the rankings. Here you go:

  1. Alabama
  2. Georgia
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Clemson
  5. Wisconsin
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Miami (biggest jumper)
  8. TCU
  9. Washington (new)

Alabama took care of business in primetime against the rival, a top 20 team in LSU and retain number 1 status, even though the official CFP rankings have them number 2. Hey look they’re the champs, they’re undefeated, they have their “signature” win so far this season. I have them number 1. Is Georgia better? Probably and hey they took care of business too. That line for the Georgia/South Carolina game with UGA a 24 point favorite? What a joke line that is. USC can wreck a good UGA season. No way I would have gone with that. The game went down like expected and Georgia will be in the SEC Championship game and I think at least they’ll have sugar falling from the sky at the rate they’re going. Good win for Clemson on the road against a dangerous top 20 team. It’s all out in front of them. Notre Dame had a nice little win against Wake Forest. HUGE game in Miami on Saturday. This will tell a lot. Could have quite amount of movement next week if these top 4 falter with 3 of them having tough games…or nothing changes. Wisconsin. So yeah they on paper had a good win. A lot of that game was underwhelming. But they’re undefeated still, they won on the road. They hold serve. I will say it doesn’t help that the Big Ten below them did not have a good day. They have a prime chance to get jumped now. Probably won’t be by Oklahoma though. Bedlam lived up to it. More a basketball score than anything. And this is the problem with the Big 12. No defense. Sigh but hey look they won on the road against another team that was in the rankings, you can’t punish that. But…I’m getting that bad feeling again about Big 12 teams. Color me not impressed. Miami with a big big win at home against a top 15 team. They take the highest rise of the week and they remain undefeated. Ohhh that Notre Dame game is the game of the week coming up. Win that and they’re top 5, probably into the 4 too. Highest opportunity for rise. TCU had a good win against an eh Texas team. Doesn’t hurt them but doesn’t help, they stay where they’re at. Huge game at Oklahoma on Saturday. Probably the biggest game in the Big 12 this year, this should ensure more separation. We’ll know a ton more about how things shake out after this coming week. Washington and the Pac 12 break into the rankings. Ok so last week I had them in the Foster Farms Bowl hahaha, now they’re in the Peach….what a jump. Nice win but dang that Arizona State loss hurts. But that’s their only loss. I don’t think we’ll know how good they really are until they play Washington State. I was so ready to just drop Ohio State out of these rankings altogether. Overrated. They got SLAUGHTERED at Iowa. Horrible. *shakes head* Fortunate that they stay in because the rest of the college football isn’t great. Wake me up for the Michigan game. Central Florida, UCF as they’re called had a pretty good win at home staying undefeated. Won’t know much until they play South Florida I guess. Penn State, *face palm*. I know the weather sucked yesterday in East Lansing. Bad loss though and they too are another team that needs to get out of these rankings. Bad day for the Big Ten. Again though, the bubble teams didn’t get it done. My bubble teams going into yesterday were Iowa State that had a tough game but it wasn’t a good look in that loss…NC State couldn’t get it done…Virginia Tech is just not in the same league and Memphis had a big road win against lousy competition but their loss to UCF hurts. None of the bubble made it. Who could break through next week? Michigan State if they beat Ohio State, Auburn could if they take Georgia, Mississippi State in the same boat if they beat Alabama and Michigan which their big test comes in 2 weeks in Wisconsin. Huge week to come, exciting games this Saturday which will tell a lot and set the tone as we get closer to Championship Saturday.

Bowl Predictions 10/29

It’s my favorite time of year as we get into the final month of the college football season and its time for bowl predictions! This ahead of the first College Football Playoff rankings coming out on Tuesday. These are my picks for the top 12 teams and where I think the bowls should lineup based on these picks. Now this will change, probably a lot between now and Championship Saturday. But that’s the fun of it all really. It’s like doing a weather forecast 10 days in advance but with much less responsibility haha. Alright here goes:

1. Alabama
2. Georgia
3. Notre Dame
4. Clemson
5. Wisconsin
6. Ohio State
7. Oklahoma
8. TCU
9. Penn State
10. Oklahoma State

Once again its Alabama and everyone else but in reality I don’t think the gap is that wide between number 1 and number 3. Actually think Georgia is playing better football than anyone right now. I hope 1 and 2 continue winning because this will set up an epic SEC Championship. Could the loser just not make it into the playoff? I don’t know…I really don’t I wonder if the lower could still be in the top 4. Depends on everyone else but yeah if they just keep winning they’re in the catbird seat for the playoff. Could be an amazing rematch just a few weeks later. I like Notre Dame this year. Only blemish was a very very close loss at home against Georgia. But they’re up there with good wins on the road and beat a hot NC State team yesterday. Then it gets muddy. Past the number 3, till about number 8 you can really throw schools in a hat and rank them just about. Clemson, bad loss on the road. It was close but that’s not a good loss. Because they could easily be a top team, at least number 2. Still in the playoff, they have to win out and they’d be in. Wisconsin, eh. Undefeated and I give props for teams that haven’t lost. In the end do I think they sustain this? I don’t think so. Best win is against Northwestern. Eh. Ohio State, damn they just HAD to lose to Oklahoma…at home earlier in the season. Very good win yesterday at home…very close against Penn State. But Oklahoma is dragging them down. Speaking of they’re not ahead of the Buckeyes despite beating them because they lost to Iowa State at home!!! They make me nervous in that are they overvalued are they really the best Big 12 team? I actually like TCU more. They score a ton. Very good win at Oklahoma State. Lost close at Iowa State. No signature win though. Penn State…not a good look losing to Ohio State but it was close and it was on the road. They beat Michigan badly but do we consider that a signature win? Oklahoma State is alright I mean they had a very good win at West Virginia but lost to TCU at home. Miami seems like a paper tiger to me. No signature wins, they beat Syracuse at home, ooooooooo k. Undefeated sure but a team that when they do get beat will drop out of the rankings never to return probably. Best win is against Syracuse at home. I mention about the undefeated teams giving them love…well you could say what about Miami, why are they only at 11? Strength of conference, strength of victories. They could certainly rise though if they keep winning…but if they lose……its over. Then there’s Central Florida cuz you gotta have a non-power school get into one of these games and I think they’re best in the bunch at this point.

If things go the way they should, watch for a lot of jockeying between 5-11. Pac 12 is shut out. Not a good year in that conference but gotta throw USC a bone….I guess…to get them into one of those committee games.

Adding in some conference championship predictions and that Oklahoma/Oklahoma State projection and that’s how I get my bowl picks. Not based on the rankings that I have this week but based on how I see things working out next week and this is my projection of where things shake up. The final bowl prediction will come next week after Championship Saturday. Rivalry Saturday was fun. To me it’s still Alabama and everyone else. Big win in the Iron Bowl. I’m of the mind that they’re a lock for the playoff even if they lose by 50 in the SEC Championship which I don’t see happening. But they’re the only team where if you could put an astrick saying clinch a spot in the playoff, its them. Tough tough loss for Michigan falling out of the top 4 and I don’t see them coming back in. Unless Clemson and Washington both lose in their conference championship. That’s the only way. But I see the Rose Bowl being their likely scenario based on my B1G Championship prediction. Ohio State moves up to number 2 after that razor thin win in The Game. So…could they get knocked out of the top 4? A lot said about teams that don’t win their conference or even play in their conference championship not deserving a shot. I think they deserve a shot considering how this college football season there are no real great teams. Yeah there’s Alabama but there’s a lot of parity out there. Remember a few weeks ago I said that under .500 teams are going to get in bowls? Well its going to happen and its just a testament to the big picture being very mediocre this year.  I think its very unlikely that Ohio State doesn’t get in the top 4 in the end. Hard for me seeing a scenario where they don’t. Clemson in a blowout of their rival and they move up a spot. Kind of sucky that if they lose in their conference championship that its a wrap for them in the top 4 but that’s the way it is this year. They have to win it to stay in the playoff. Wisconsin had a nice win but they’re at number 4 this week and has there been an uninspiring number 4 at this late in the year that you can imagine? I mean its really by default that they’re here. I’m not entirely convinced that even winning the B1G Championship would ensure they stay at 4. I really am not. They are the team that has the most opportunity to get jumped. But a New Year’s Six bowl results. Nice blowout for Penn State but their blowout wasn’t as impressive as Washington so they surprisingly fall a spot despite their big win. Even with a B1G Championship which I project Penn State getting they are on the outside looking in unless Clemson and Washington both lose. Oklahoma didn’t play and fall a spot. Can’t see a way that they get into the top 4 even with a win in Bedlam which I do project. But the Sugar Bowl is coming their way. Nice blowout for Washington and that was needed for me anyway to give them some cred. They’re sitting in the catbird seat up to number 6 this week and most opportunity to move into the Top 4 and I project that they will move in with any kind of win in their Championship game.  A loss and they’re out of the New Year’s Six completely very likely. Western Michigan keeps rolling undefeated…hardest game of the year coming up in the MAC Championship. Will make the difference between the Cotton Bowl and the…Dollar General Bowl. At least they’re heading to the south regardless. Bad bad loss for Louisville, just awful and they’re out of any kind of contention for a New Year’s Six game. That can’t happen especially to Kentucky. Louisville are just a bunch of posers this year really. They’re out of the top 12. Bad bad loss for Boise State too. Sheesh, thanks a lot. But Colorado had a good win and up to number 10 this week. I see them taking a tough loss which unfortunately would knock them out of a New Year’s Six game. A win and they’re going to the Rose though. Should be a good game against Washington. New this week to the top 12 are Oklahoma State which if they beat Oklahoma they’ll see sugar falling from the sky and Florida State who thanks to Louisville screwing it up are headed to the Orange Bowl most likely. Unless Clemson loses.

The rest of the predictions I have with Auburn making it into the Sugar because Florida would have been rated lower than Auburn after losing to Alabama in the SEC Championship so they take the highest rated SEC team. Then the bowl predictions fall like they do for the rest. With an expected Colorado loss I expect USC to jump over Colorado, since they will have the same record and the Trojans beat them in the regular season, in the rankings and get a Rose Bowl bid. Not a whole lot of change in the bowl predictions. Tennessee takes a big fall from thinking Sugar last week and then they lose to Vandy and now its TaxSlayer. Nebraska with a terrible loss against Iowa went from the Orange to the Foster Farms Bowl. NC State gets into a better bowl after beating North Carolina so that should earn them a trip to the Bronx.
